Knit Your Bit

Saturday, July 3, 2021

“Knit Your Bit” was the cry that sounded across the United States homefront during World War One. For soldiers whose uniforms could not protect them from trench life and the cold of winter, such garments as hats, gloves, and socks were vital to survival. The American Red Cross began a campaign in the States, asking for people to begin knitting these necessary items, in order to send them overseas to the boys. Americans of all ages and walks of life rallied around the call, making approximately 370 million knitted garments from the years 1917-1919. These handmade items boosted morale both at home and in the trenches, and saved the lives of countless soldiers.

The Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park is excited to offer a program on the weekends, highlighting this amazing unification of American effort, and what it looked like to be on the homefront during the “War to End all Wars.” Come by anytime Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 11:00 am CT at the York barn to learn more about this vital initiative and how knitting truly helped win the war.
